Ad highlights how the House tax plan partially eliminates SALT deduction for individuals and families while keeping it for corporations
WASHINGTON – Americans Against Double Taxation today launched a nationwide radio campaign, ahead of next week’s expected House floor vote on the tax plan, calling on taxpayers to urge their member of Congress to vote no on the bill because it “kills” the state and local tax (SALT) deduction millions rely on, and will cause the taxes paid by homeowners to go up while their property values go down. The radio buy will cover a dozen states and reach more than 35 Republican-led congressional districts in suburban areas that would be hard hit by the tax plan.
Bob Chlopak, Co-Director of the Coalition, said: “Middle-class homeowners in these suburban districts will be hard hit because the changes in the House tax plan do not make up for the loss of the significant state and local tax deduction these taxpayers currently claim. We’ve put organizers on the ground, media on the air, and social media across the Internet in an effort to educate taxpayers and persuade lawmakers to vote no on the tax plan to protect the interests of their constituents.”
The coalition, comprised of organizations representing state and local governments and officials, educators, police and firefighters, realtors and other stakeholders, has waged a vigorous campaign to protect the deduction, arguing that many homeowners will see their taxes go up and property values go down as a result of the partial elimination of SALT. In recent weeks, the coalition has released a study finding that middle-class homeowners in 39 suburban districts would face increases as high as nearly $6,000 because of the loss of the SALT deduction. This week the coalition also released an analysis of the property tax deduction cap included in the House tax plan, concluding it was a “phantom deduction” that would have no benefit for most middle-class homeowners. The coalition also has waged a campaign calling the House plan a “double tax double standard” because it fully preserves SALT for corporations while largely eliminating the deduction for middle-class individuals and families.
The 60-second radio ad, fashioned as a kitchen table conversation between a couple, tells taxpayers that while Congress “eliminates your state and local tax deduction, they’re letting big corporations keep theirs. You pay more, they pay less,” the ad says. It also advises the plan could “cost homeowners thousands, while driving down property values,” and asks taxpayers to contact Congress and urge a no vote on the tax plan.
